: ‘Broken down hack politician’: Trump lashes out after McConnell laments that ‘candidate quality’ could keep Republicans from taking Senate

Former President Donald Trump is blasting Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell over comments that suggest Republicans could fail to flip the Senate this fall based on what the Kentucky lawmaker called “candidate quality.”

Writing on his social-media platform over the weekend, Trump disparaged McConnell as a “broken down hack politician” and said the veteran GOP senator should spend more time and money helping the candidates.

Trump’s ire appears to have been provoked by comments McConnell made last week in Kentucky.

“I think there’s probably a greater likelihood the House flips than the Senate,” the minority leader said. “Senate races are just different — they’re statewide, [and] candidate quality has a lot to do with the outcome.”

McConnell didn’t name names. But Trump-backed Senate candidates including Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania and J.D. Vance in Ohio have struggled in the polls against their Democratic challengers.

Trump also disparaged his former transportation secretary, Elaine Chao, who is McConnell’s wife. Chao resigned after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol by a mob of Trump supporters.
